ADDING BLUE TO THE GREEN REVOLUTION

Deep tech for the planet

We need to regenerate our oceans if human civilization is to survive.  Marine Permaculture Institute protects coastal communities with sustainable mariculture.

THE PROBLEM

Our oceans are suffering

Picture

Too hot to turn

A heated ocean fails to circulate water, denying marine life vital nutrients from deep below.
Picture

Fried and stratified

Seawater stratification – forming into separate ‘stable’ layers – is in fact deeply destabilising to marine ecosystems.

The marine furnace

93% of greenhouse gas emissions end up in the upper ocean, destroying ocean eco-systems.
SOLUTIONS

What can the Marine Permaculture Institute do?

By developing sustainable deep tech for the planet, the
Marine Permaculture Institute can –  working with nature and communities–
help to revive our oceans, feed millions and even reverse global warming.

MARINE PERMACULTURE INSTITUTE

From deforestation
to Seaforestation.

New solutions are needed to help Earth survive climate change.
The Marine Permaculture Institute was formed to collect and preserve solutions
for use in communities around the world.

OUR MISSION

From footprints to handprints.

Food Security

Marine Permaculture Institute can help provide food security for billions by providing patented solutions for the seas and soils.

Ecosystem Survival

The kelp forest is the most productive ecosystem on the planet. We’re looking to spawn a new Marine Permaculture industry which will enable the sustainable growth of kelp forests and other seaweed habitats around the world in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate waters.

Carbon Balance

Nature has always done a fine job of fixing carbon. Our innovations can help re-empower nature to fix, export and store carbon the way it always has done.
OUR MOTIVATION

Coral Reefs: the Canary
in the Coal-mine.

The Anthropocene epoch – one of mass extinction caused by human beings – is already under way. During the last similar epoch (Permian – more than 250m years ago,) the Earth lost 96% of all marine species and 70% of all land species. And all previous mass extinctions on the planet have been presaged by the ‘canary in the coalmine’: loss of coral reefs. We are now on the cusp of losing coral reefs globally.

92%

Of the extra heat energy from global warming is stored in the oceans

>90%

of natural seaweed forests have been lost off the coast of California and Tasmania
