People with COVID-19 experience oxygenation failure more than respiratory failure, known as chronic hypoxia, a root cause of host inflammatory response leading to organ failures and morbidity. Medical professionals observe abnormal physiology in the form of silent hypoxia, where hospitalized patients are being admitted with low oxygen levels, and no shortness of breath.
Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) therapy directly addresses chronic hypoxia and can reverse inflammatory response with outpatient therapy before hospitalization. Early HBO therapy protects hospital capacity and reduces resource demand, while improving patient outcomes, including reduced inflammation and reduced organ failure. HBO therapy treatment for COVID-19 induced hypoxia has proven to increase blood oxygen saturation levels across tested patients, and improve patient outcomes. Globally, there are only 4,500 hyperbaric oxygen chambers available, most of which can only support the treatment of 1 or 2 patients at a time.
CAirPlanes proposes to use stranded aircraft for affordable Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) treatment to supplement and enhance infrastructure for addressing COVID-19 symptoms early before hospitalization. The use of airplanes to facilitate HBO treatment allows for an unprecedented capacity of treating 200 patients simaltaneously, per airplane. This venture scales HBO airplane treatment to improve pandemic infrastructure available to address COVID-19. It can prevent hospitalization, resulting in reduced resource demand.
An HBO retrofitted airplane augments community resilience through increased available and affordable treatment to vulnerable populations. This technology directly benefits those with higher risk of negative outcomes due to age, pre-existing conditions, and medical history, and those facing financial limitations after the crisis, including unemployed. In addition, this technology enables the return to work of airline employees, as operation of the grounded airplane to provide HBO therapy to patients will require ground crews, pilots, and aircraft staff.
CAirPlanes can eliminate most of the risk of fatality due to COVID-19, providing what may in the end be a more effective treatment than ventilators and CPAP machines. It also has the unprecedented capacity to provide millions of treatments. The resilience presented by the implementation of HBO airplanes is not limited by geographic region, as the additional HBO servicing system does not impact the airplanes mobility, presenting an opportunity for national, and global resilience.
